McKenzie Therapy Method
The McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is an approach that is trusted and used by practitioners and patients worldwide for common problems of the back, neck and extremities. Each distinct syndrome is addressed according to its unique nature with mechanical procedures using movement and positions.
Unique to the McKenzie Method is a comprehensive and logical step-by-step process to evaluate your problem quickly. Through treatment, you will gain an experiential education and learn to self-treat your present problem. By implementing this self-care regime and modifying behaviors, you can minimize the risk of recurrence as well as rapidly manage them when symptoms occur.
Research has shown the initial McKenzie Method assessment procedures to be as reliable as costly diagnostic imaging (i.e., x-rays, MRIs) to determine the source of the problem and quickly identify responders and non-responders.

Moxibustion treatment (moxa) is a traditional form of Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves the burning of mugwort (ai ye) to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi (vital life force or energy), and maintain general health. In TCM, moxa is used for a cold or stagnant condition to expel cold from the body and warm the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and qi.
In Western medicine, moxibustion treatment has successfully been used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down (vertex) position prior to childbirth. A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998 found that up to 75% of women suffering from breech presentations before childbirth had fetuses that rotated to the normal position after receiving moxibustion at an acupuncture point on the Bladder meridian.
There are two types of moxibustion treatment: direct and indirect. In direct moxibustion, a small, cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned; it is extinguished or removed before it burns the skin allowing the patient to experience a deep pleasant heating sensation. Indirect moxibustion is the more popular form (and is the one used in our office), using cones on self adhesive bases, on the end of a needle, in a special container known as a warmer or a stick, roughly the shape and size of a cigar. The moxa is held close to the area being treated for several minutes until the area turns rosey.
Myofascial Release technique is a gentle blend of stretching and massage using traction and positioning of the body to coax muscles in spasm to relax, and break painful adhesions in the fascia (tissue). Scarring or injury to this network of connective tissue is a major cause of pain and impeded motion.
Hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints alleviates the discomfort associated with everyday occupational stresses, muscular overuse and many chronic pain syndromes. Myofascial Release technique can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning, if employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury. The therapy’s easy stretches aim to alleviate these problems by breaking up, or “releasing,” constrictions or snags in the fascia. This therapy is used for many conditions as well in people of all ages.
Benefits of Myofascial Release technique include:
● Enhancing general relaxation and stress reduction
● Improved circulation of blood and lymph
● Improving immune system functioning
● Increased flexibility of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues
● Increased joint range of motion
● Relieving muscle aches and stiffness
● Removal of metabolic waste products from muscles

Therapeutic exercises can be used for rehabilitation, referring to a wide range of physical activities that focuses on restoring and maintaining strength, endurance, flexiblity, stability, and balance. The goal of therapeutic exercises is to return an injured patient to a fully functioning, pain-free state.
After inflammation is reduced and normal joint mechanics are restored, either with chiropractic manipulative therapy and/ or McKenzie Method, a thorough evaluation of an individual’s physical capabilities and activities of daily living/goals for care will be addressed to shape a treatment care plan containing a slowly-progressing exercise program that is appropriate to each individual’s needs. The exercise program focuses on regaining range of motion and rebuilding muscle strength and endurance. Exercises that may be included in a therapeutic program include:
Strengthening exercises, usually performed with heavy resistance and fewer repetitions – kettle bells and weights.
Endurance exercises that engage large muscle groups over a longer period of time – TRX.
Flexibility exercises achieved through stretching and movement – yoga theraputics.
Balance and coordination exercises that focus on maintaining an individual’s center of gravity – box jumps and use of wobble and rocker board exercises.
Vaginal steaming (V-Steam), known as ‘chai-yok’ in Korea and ‘bajos’ in Central and South America, has been used in ancient medicine for centuries to detoxify and heal imbalances in the vagina, cervix or uterus. Typically done a day or two after the menses have finished, V-Steam treatments dilate the blood vessels, increase blood circulation, provide oxygenation and relax the pelvic floor muscles to relieve stagnation of qi and blood in the pelvis and rid the uterus of cold which can cause any of the conditions noted below.
Herbs that are used in the steam are mugwort, basil, calendula, oregano, marshmallow root, wormwood and rosemary, which help ease anxiety in women as well as tackle several other health issues, including:
● Amenorrhea (lack of period) or dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
● Healing from pelvic surgeries
● Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
● Uterine fibroids
● Vaginal or cervical cysts
Typically, V-Steam treatments last for 30 minutes. To increase the absorption and effects of the herbs, abdominal massage (like Mercier Therapy) is usually conducted after the V-Steam.
Please note that V-Steams should be avoided if you believe you may be pregnant.
Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. Developed by Dr. Larry Webster, the goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.
Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), discovered this adjustment as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function. The assessment includes heel flexion to buttocks, with restricted flexion indicating the affected SI joint. Correction is made with a diversified, sacral adjustment. Part two of the correction includes palpation of the round ligaments – an anteriorly located ligament that supports the uterus, using the more restricted ligament as a point to release. Common symptoms include (but are not limited to) low back pain, sciatic neuralgia, and symptoms associated with sacral subluxation and or SI joint dysfunction.
Sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e., dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. Sacral misalignment may contribute to these three primary causes of dystocia via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia according to research published throught the ICPA.
Webster Technique is especially effective in treating pregnant women to ensure that babies achieve the most optimal position for birth.
Yoga means many different things to people. The true definition of this ancient tradition encompasses the developmental union of the body, the mind and the spirit with ultimate reality and release from the limits of the individual ego. The physical vehicle of the asanas (poses) and pranayama (direction of the breath) coupled with the awareness of movement and self is a natural way of developing qualities such as fitness, discipline, confidence, awareness, intuitiveness and intelligence gradually leaving one contained, more stable and more contented.
Initially, the physical aspect of yoga was developed as a vehicle for meditation. The repertoire of yoga prepared the body, and particularly the nervous system, for stillness, creating the necessary physical strength and stamina that allowed the mind to remain calm.
At Serenity Family Wellness, yoga asanas and pranayama is used as a therapeutic device for yogis that have injured themselves and are using this healing exercise as part of their rehabilitation; meditation and guided relaxation may also be instructed as part of the session as needed from patient to patient.
